Commonly referred to as the ‘wine bamboo’, this non-invasive bamboo grows in almost any condition here in Hawai’i.
Originally from tropical Africa, this plant (30-40 feet tall) is relatively drought tolerant for a bamboo, becoming semi-deciduous in dry conditions.
Looks beautiful in moist and humid conditions.
The sap from this plant contains sufficient sugars that it ferments in to alcohol within about 24 hours.
This plant is also part of the African medicine cabinet.
