‘Ohe Kahiko

'Ohe kahikoHula Bamboo

We believe that this is the Canoe Plant that the original Polynesians introduced to the Islands of Hawaii.  The plant is all green, has long internodes, is thin walled and it forms an upright clump to about 40 feet tall.  This is the bamboo that is traditionally used for nose flutes and hula implements.

Prefers a wet and humid environment.

In Hawaii it is often identified as Schizostachym glaucofolium, however, that botanic name refers to a different plant in the rest of the world which is why we just call it ‘Ohe Kahiko.
